Connecting your Kuycon monitor, and fixing what goes wrong

Five minutes are enough to set up a Kuycon monitor. And when something is not right — no signal, resolution stuck at 4K, refresh rate capped at 60 Hz — the cause is almost always the same: the cable or the port. Here is the procedure, then the seven situations that come up most often.

Five steps, in this order

Choose the right cable

This is the step that determines everything else. On a laptop, USB-C carries the picture, the data and up to 100 W of charging in a single cable. On a desktop, DisplayPort is the fastest route. HDMI suits consoles and simple setups. The necessary cables come with the monitor.

Connect, then switch on

Connect the monitor to power, plug in the video cable, switch the monitor on. No driver is needed: macOS, Windows and Linux recognise the monitor and its native resolution automatically. If the monitor offers several inputs, select the right source in its menu.

Check the resolution and refresh rate

On a Mac: System Settings › Displays. On Windows: Settings › System › Display › Advanced display settings. The resolution must match your model's, and the refresh rate must be set to the advertised maximum — Windows often defaults to 60 Hz, even on a 165 Hz monitor.

Set the scaling

On a 5K or 6K panel, the interface shown at 100% is tiny. macOS automatically applies 2× scaling. On Windows, choose 200% for a 27" 5K or a 32" 6K — the details per model are in our Windows guide.

Take control of the brightness

Kuycon monitors support the DDC/CI protocol: you can set brightness, contrast and colour temperature from the keyboard, without touching the monitor's buttons. Troubleshooting

The seven most common cases

In order, from the most common to the rarest. Try the steps one by one.

No signal over USB-C

Your computer's USB-C port may not carry video. Not all USB-C ports can: some handle only data and charging.

  1. Look for the DisplayPort logo or the Thunderbolt lightning bolt next to the port. A Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port always carries video.
  2. Try another USB-C port on the machine: on many laptops, only one port carries video.
  3. Use the cable provided. A cheap USB-C charging cable often carries no video signal at all.
  4. Failing that, switch to DisplayPort or HDMI to confirm the monitor works.
The computer does not detect the monitor
  1. Check that the right input source is selected in the monitor's menu.
  2. Unplug the video cable at both ends, wait ten seconds, plug it back in.
  3. On a Mac: System Settings › Displays, then hold down the Option key; a Detect Displays button appears.
  4. On Windows: Settings › System › Display › Multiple displays › Detect.
  5. Restart the computer with the monitor already on and connected.
Stuck at 4K: the 5K or 6K resolution does not appear

This is a bandwidth limit, almost never a fault in the monitor.

  1. Use DisplayPort rather than HDMI, or a Thunderbolt port if there is one.
  2. Check that your graphics card supports DSC compression: this is the case for NVIDIA GeForce RTX and AMD Radeon RX 6000 and later. Without it, the display tops out at 4K.
  3. Avoid adapters and docks for this test: many limit the bandwidth. Connect directly.
  4. On a Mac, hold the Option key while clicking on Scaled to show the full list of available resolutions.
The monitor is capped at 60 Hz
  1. On Windows the refresh rate does not change by itself: go to Settings › System › Display › Advanced display settings and select the maximum value.
  2. On the P40K and Q34W models, the HDMI port is version 2.0: the maximum refresh rate is only reached over DisplayPort or USB-C.
  3. Use the cable provided. An old HDMI or DisplayPort cable can throttle the bandwidth without saying so.
  4. On the P27Z, check the selected mode: Creator mode reaches 180 Hz in 5K, eSports mode 330 Hz at 2560 × 1440.
The image flickers or blinks
  1. Change the cable: this is the most common cause, particularly near the bandwidth limit.
  2. Step the refresh rate down one notch to check: if the flicker disappears, the cable or the port is at fault.
  3. Temporarily remove any dock, extension or adapter.
  4. On models with adaptive sync, disable the feature in the graphics driver to rule it out.
The laptop does not charge through the monitor
  1. Charging over the video cable only exists on models fitted with USB-C: over DisplayPort or HDMI it is impossible by nature.
  2. The machine's USB-C port must support charging and DisplayPort Alt mode.
  3. The monitors deliver up to 100 W: a laptop whose original charger exceeds that power will charge more slowly, particularly under a full workload.
The text looks blurry
  1. First check that the monitor is actually showing its native resolution: a lower resolution is stretched, and therefore blurry.
  2. On Windows, prefer 200% scaling on a 5K or 6K panel rather than an intermediate value: the rendering is then free of interpolation.
  3. On a Mac, choose the resolution marked default for the display rather than a scaled value.
  4. Some older applications do not handle high densities and will stay blurry whatever the setting: that comes from the software, not the monitor.

Using a MacBook with the lid closed

Closed-lid mode — or clamshell — lets you use only the external monitor, with the laptop tucked away. Three conditions: the MacBook must be connected to a power source, which is exactly what the monitor's USB-C does; an external keyboard and mouse must be connected; and the external monitor must be active. Then close the lid and the display switches over on its own.

If the Mac goes to sleep when you close the lid, it is usually because charging is not detected: check the battery icon before closing.

Connecting: frequently asked questions

Do you need to install a driver for a Kuycon monitor?

No. macOS, Windows and Linux recognise the monitor and its native resolution automatically, with no software or driver. A utility is only useful if you want to control the brightness from the keyboard via the DDC/CI protocol.

Why does my 5K monitor only display 4K?

It is almost always a bandwidth limit: an HDMI cable instead of DisplayPort, a USB-C port without DisplayPort Alt mode, a dock throttling the signal, or a graphics card without DSC compression. Connect directly, over DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, with the cable provided.

My 165 Hz monitor is stuck at 60 Hz, what should I do?

On Windows, the maximum refresh rate must be selected manually in Settings › System › Display › Advanced display settings. Then check the port used: on the P40K and Q34W, HDMI is version 2.0 and does not have the necessary bandwidth; you have to switch to DisplayPort or USB-C.

Can a single cable both power and display?

Yes, on models fitted with USB-C: picture, data and up to 100 W of charging go through the same cable, provided your computer's port supports DisplayPort Alt mode. A laptop whose original charger exceeds 100 W will simply charge more slowly.

How do you use a MacBook with the lid closed?

Connect the MacBook to power — the monitor's USB-C is enough — connect an external keyboard and mouse, check that the external monitor is active, then close the lid. If the Mac goes to sleep, it is usually because charging is not detected.
